James Donovan – VP Education Services – CommScope

The Challenge

As a multi-billion dollar network infrastructure provider, CommScope approached Cabling Science in 2000 to integrate and deliver their training services to staff across a series of recently acquired companies, including Avaya Connectivity Solutions.

The Process

Cabling Science’s objective was to create a completely outsourced training solution that would not only be self-funded, but establish a separate revenue stream for CommScope through the sale of training to business partners and customers. This has been maintained for twelve years now thanks to the strong relationship forged between the two companies, as well as the development of a training passport scheme offering discounts to CommScope’s most committed business partners. Another success arising from the partnership has been the development of a fully branded training site called the CommScope Infrastructure Academy. Using their customizable training platform, this site sits alongside CommScope’s existing website and supports online courses, webinars, videos and even materials for classroom training. The financial and logistical efficiencies of the symbiotic relationship between the two companies has largely been fueled by CommScope’s acquisition activity, allowing Cabling Science to bring fragmented training budgets and localized courses into one globalized training delivery system. By rebranding and centralizing all existing training materials, Cabling Science has been able to develop a standardized syllabus and student qualification for all of CommScope’s business partners. This has led to the establishment of a centralized training budget funded solely by course sales, allowing for more financial accountability and control.

The Results

The interdependent relationship between Cabling Science and CommScope continues to develop, with course content continually being updated. Costs have reduced significantly and course localization has seen training materials developed in multiple languages. As for CommScope’s Infrastructure Academy, it now sells over 20,000 online and classroom courses every year and has become a beacon of social media activity and online discussion for student engineers, designers and installers.
